DePuy Orthopaedics—a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson—recalled its metal-on-metal “ASR” hip replacement system devices in 2010 because the devices come loose, fracturing the bone around the implant. The defective ASR hip units deteriorate and deposit flakes of metal into patients’ bloodstreams. Some recipients of ASR hips have developed pseudotumors—soft tissue masses resulting from adverse reactions to toxic metal debris.
Now, however, J&J is reportedly looking to settle all pending lawsuits for a total of $4 billion, with each victim to receive an average of $300,000.
